THE PROJECT
BESPOKE STAINLESS STEEL DINING TABLE
ENGINEERED TO COME APART.
DESIGNED TO LOOK SOLID.
Working with the designer, Random Spaces developed and manufactured this bespoke stainless steel dining table for a private Melbourne residence.
Fabricated entirely from 304 stainless steel, the table features an orbital finish with an aged patina. The tabletop was constructed from 1.6mm folded stainless steel over a bonded timber core, creating the appearance and substantial edge profile of a solid piece without the unnecessary weight.
Particular attention was given to the welded and ground corner details, allowing the folded construction to read as a seamless, solid form. The four individual legs were fabricated from 5mm stainless steel plate.
Access to the apartment presented another important design challenge. The table needed to be completely modular while remaining rigid once assembled. We developed the construction so the top could be manufactured in two halves, with four removable legs and concealed bolted connections, allowing each component to be transported through the apartment doorway before final assembly on site.
Random Spaces completed the modular design development, production drawings, metal and timber fabrication, finishing, delivery and final installation.
